  Background & early life Mamdani was born October 18, 1991 in Kampala, Uganda. His father is Mahmood Mamdani, a scholar of Indian-Ugandan heritage. His mother is Mira Nair, an Indian-American filmmaker. His family moved to the United States when he was young. He attended the The Bronx High School of Science and later graduated from Bowdoin College with a BA in Africana Studies. Before politics, he worked as a housing‐counselor, helping low-income homeowners in Queens stay in their homes — this experience helped shape his interest in housing policy. Political career & profile He is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and the Democratic Party. He was elected to the New York State Assembly representing the 36th district (covering parts of Queens) beginning January 1, 2021.
